Thank you, Nicki, for explaining the Critical Mass principle so adeptly. As I've conducted more research on organizations implementing the principle effectively, I came across Proctor & Gamble, a company actually enforcing accountability. They tie executive's compensation to their track record of developing and promoting women in leadership.

Nicki -

Thanks for such a well written article. We are indeed getting to the nitty gritty when trying to measure the "success" of all sorts of initiatives to even the playing field. Backtesting to see whether different policies and ideas have had the desired impact is crucial, and is not being done (it isn't being done in the area of racial diversity either).

Taking the steps you outline is not "sexy", the way that making policy is, but we all know the devil is in the details. Things don't get done unless they are measured, unless lofty ideals are followed up with policies, procedures and benchmarks.

I've already passed this along to many friends who are interested in the subject and hope that we can get momentum behind achieving Critical Mass.
