Second, though not far behind #1, thanks for sharing your insight in this excellent piece. I'll be tweeting it out to my followers shortly and expect to see multiple retweets following!

I am an avid reader of The Economist, but this week's issue really had me questioning my commitment. I can't count the number of times in my career that I've heard men trumpet how great things are for women in the workplace. I heard it in the '80s, the '90s and throughout the last decade - and on Wall Street, no less. Man rarely seem to question their sacred ideal of the meritocracy -- like how it actually functions in organizations dominated by men, or even how merit is defined -- which is, in my view, exactly how we ended up flushing our economy down the toilet.

It seems that many business men, as well as a few journalists at The Economist, continue to blithely inhabit a very separate and privileged reality.

As a women in the workforce for over 30 years, 14+ of which as a working mother, I couldn't agree more with your observations. Perhaps the Obama Administration can take a hard look at creating incentives for companies to create (fix) a culture that is built to support the working & return-to-the workforce mother, I'm not sure when, if ever, we will achieve true equality.

We have so many mothers in our community at MyWorkButterfly.com like me frustrated by the injustices and ready for change.

Thanks Nicki for focusing on this critical issue.

Another purely excellent article! And not only because it reinforces and parallels my vision, principles, and philosophies. I had read the Economist article and was still steaming, waiting to respond until I could do so without sarcasm. Thank you for your comprehensive and well-thought out, professional post.
