Our office manager was given permission to spend what amounted to $5.00 per admin staff for Secretaries'/Admins' Day. Wow. I don't think anyone here will go above and beyond for this place. It was highly insulting.

I work in the (unionized) public sector. My secretary does a good job, but I'm afraid there's still an attitude around the office here that more "professional development" = being expected to do more work. When, as in this economy, doing more work doesn't necessarily = higher pay, administrative staff are reluctant to go beyond already-defined roles. So, the traditional flowers/card/etc. is still the default here.
